A weird thing has been happening this season, where I find myself really appreciating what the writers have been doing with the gang but I’m not laughing nearly as much as I should. This episode was a prime example of that. Dennis is notorious for his way with women, so hearing a full breakdown of the DENNIS System should have been a complete riot (a riot with cringing, sure). I smiled at certain parts and quietly enjoyed the scary-elaborate ways of Dennis and the rest of the gang, though ultimately, the laughs fell short. Perhaps things are feeling a little forced this season?
Trust in the douchiness of your characters and the chemistry of your actors, writers! The lines will come.
The all-too straightforward initial DENNIS System lesson, like a twisted mishmash of seduction community teachings and psychopathic phone-harassment, was beautifully executed (”Pizza’s good…” “You’re the one that’s good”), and there is something startling and fantastic about Mac in glasses and a cardigan (Yes. More librarian attire on the Paddy’s Pub boys, please). I think the actual explanation and illustrative sequence was funnier than the way the events eventually played out.
The horrible feeding chain naturally developed by the rest of the gang to swoop in and take Dennis’ leftovers was also an inspired concept, with each level becoming less and less intricate. Ladies, don’t deny how you would react if Danny Devito “accidentally” dropped a Mangum condom by your feet. It clearly means he has a “monster dong.”
When the Waitress made her return in “The Waitress Is Getting Married” (still holding strong as the best of the season so far), we missed out on some of that classic Waitress/Charlie interaction. Not that they’ll ever get together without some ridiculous deus ex machina or if Charlie starts bathing properly (probably also by deus ex machina) but if they were to do so, they should totally run a carnival together. It seems so right.
A surprise standout performance was delivered by Travis Schuldt as Ben, Dee’s SoldierofFortune, putting on those stupid cut-offs again and making his second appearance on the show. He brings out the best horribleness in Dee. I’m wondering if he’s the first completely good and well-intentioned character that has ever appeared on Always Sunny. Like, ever. Even Rickety Cricket revealed himself to have ulterior motives when he was a priest, the initially innocent lawyer guy exacted his revenge on the gang in the Kitten Mittons episode, and the seemingly vulnerable and eager Artemis turned out to be kind of crazy and a little too eager. Maybe Fatty Magoo came close, but Ben is simply niceness incarnate in one grinning, sweaty guy in a car.
Also, I damn near lost it at Ben’s line “I like turtles.” I think that may have been the first time I’ve ever heard someone reference that video in a sitcom. I believe I only laughed out loud at this moment and Dee’s needlessly panicked physical reaction to the picnic. Yup.

There’s a sunny future for cable networks FX and Comedy Central.
The two media outlets are joining forces to run FX’s successful series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” in syndication starting summer 2010. The critically acclaimed show, currently in its fifth season, will continue its episodes first-run on FX through the sixth and seventh seasons, totaling 84 episodes by 2011.
In a press release on Comedy Central’s Web site, executive Steve MacDonald, the general sales manager of Twentieth Television, was among those announcing the show’s future.
“Crossing a series from one hugely successful cable brand to another speaks volumes to the show’s loyal viewers and skyrocketing ratings,” he said. “Greg Meidel, President of Twentieth Television, and I are thrilled that Comedy Central will place ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ beside the network’s strong slate of cutting-edge programming; further elevating this hilarious series and introducing a unique cast of characters to new audiences.”
“It’s Always Sunny” debuted on FX in 2005. The show follows the antics of “The Gang,” a group of Philly friends and bar owners who never run out of crazy schemes and have no sense of moral decency. Skewering topics such racism, sexual abuse, terrorism and more, the series has continually pushed boundaries since its inception.
The show’s pilot was made for only $200 and shot on a handheld camera by series stars Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton. FX picked up the show for seven episodes, also bringing in actress Kaitlin Olson to co-star. In the second season, Danny DeVito joined the cast as Howerton’s and Olson’s depraved father, Frank Reynolds. The ensemble has since featured these five, also bringing in guest stars like Anne Archer, Stephen Collins, Judy Greer, Sinbad and more.
In its current season, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is doing well in ratings. For adults 18 to 49, viewership is up 55 percent and 51 percent with adults 18 to 34.

Episode Synopsis: IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA “The World Series Defense” Season 5 Episode 6 – The gang tries to get out of paying a parking ticket that they received on the evening of the final game of the 2008World Series.

(S05E01) It’s Always Sunny is back and it’s kicking your ass. Or at least it’s threatening you and your wife until you start crying a little bit and agree to partake in the antics, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. There were a lot of good moments in the premiere episode, though it didn’t really feel like a typical season opener, in as much as it didn’t present anything too big and different from the usual Always Sunny episode. Again, it was funny, of course, but it didn’t scream “premiere”, and perhaps that’s the best thing for Always Sunny.

Honestly, a small part of me feared that five seasons in would be about the time the creators decided to give the show a mini-makeover, like some other shows. Make a fancier title design, drop “Temptation Sensation” for something specifically tailored to the show… I probably would have started shouting at the television (because we all know that’s incredibly effective) if there was something like a wacky season five spruce-up of the opening credits. I still feel the sting of Weeds‘ almost-betrayal in my mind, when they dropped their catchy little theme tune for some crappy digital visual gags.
But I digress.
The members of the gang don’t change, don’t improve upon their selves, so why should anything be punched up and different on the show? Dropping us right into another terrible, greedy plot (which ends in a carefree chicken fight in someone else’s pool) is just perfect and maybe even a little reassuring, as if to let us know that it’s still the show we love.
As always, whenever there are people suffering and feeling a little desperate, the gang sees a golden opportunity. In this case, it’s the mortgage crisis, and in this episode, the boys decided to make a little cash from it. Mac and Dennis donned some blazers and got a little flirtatious and needlessly angry (respectively) to try and sell a house they technically didn’t already have. One of the best parts of the episode was just Mac’s confused fury-face after the confrontation on the stairs. I would also like to note that Mac could have removed the sleeves from that blazer and totally pulled off that look.
Meanwhile, Charlie brushed up on some of his lawyer-ing skills, which somehow turned into him putting on his one go-to tie and challenging a real lawyer to a duel. I like how Charlie’s illiteracy has now spiraled out of just crazy-scribbles to generously sprinkled malapropisms in his speech. Yeah. “Malapropisms.” I totally paid attention to most of AP English.
Sweet Dee, on the other hand, essentially tried to sell her uterus as prime real estate to a couple looking for a surrogate. “You guys want to do the Octomom thing? I’m game. You want to out-do that bitch? I’ll have that conversation! — I’m kidding, I don’t want ten people inside of me.” Also, way to find an excuse to show off those abs. Kaitlin Olson, your lankiness is deceptive.
Frank was also there, accidentally severely burning children’s hands and sending battering rams through gates. Usual Frank stuff.
