Always Sunny, always funny

The season premiere of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia aired last Thursday night on FX (Channel 36), with two brand new episodes. Now on its fourth season, the over the top MA-LV rated comedy continues to deliver in a very innovative way. Always Sunny is known for presenting serious ideas in a format that can never be taken seriously.

This week, the Episodes “Mac and Dennis: Man hunters” and “The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis” covered the ideas of cannibalism and rising gas prices respectively. Characters Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) and Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olsen) are told they were fed human meat by their father Frank (Danny Devito).

This leads them to believe they have a cannibalistic hunger, resulting in a rampage through the city to eat every type of meat imaginable, searching for the taste they crave. Eventually they end up in a morgue with a hot plate, and the rest writes itself. sunny1a Always Sunny, always funny

Always Sunny has prided itself on going over the top with touchy subjects, by introducing its main characters as the most morally backwards people you would ever meet.

The characters constantly propose murder and sexual favors as the solution to the problems they get themselves into. Theft and torture are common place. In a drastically comic moment, Frank water boards his daughter, Dee, in a urinal. Water boarding is a giant issue in political debate today, (the act of pouring water onto someone’s face while a cloth covers it to simulate drowning as a means of torture: i.e. cruel and unusual punishment), but is turned into playful fodder for the Always Sunny cast.

I would recommend the show to anyone with a slightly dark sense of humor. But let us admit that viewers are likely to watch a show that insults them as much as one that makes them laugh. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is for those of us who like the South Park approach to comedy, laughing in the face of pop-culture issues with reckless abandon, without the terrible cartoon animation. The sitcom is a strikingly unique gem among others. If you enjoy a good satire on anything under the sun, watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FX Thursdays at 10 p.m.
